Health & Safety

Employers are supposed to report all accidents to the HSE that involve injuries serious enough to cause an absence from work for more than 3 days. The HSE are then supposed to seriously investigate all such reports and consider appropriate actions and even prosecution.

They are also supposed to visit workplaces to ensure they are safe, even if accidents have not been reported to them.

But, does that work in reality? How can we ensure that members’ accidents are reported and properly investigated and how can we ensure steps are taken to ensure a proper health & safety environment, to avoid any dangerous practices? There is only one way and that is to do it ourselves. In partnership with Thompson’s Solicitors we now have a system where we will report all accidents to the HSE and ensure that the appropriate actions & investigations are taking place. We will also, in appropriate circumstances, pursue breaches of health and safety legislation, where there has been no accident, through the Courts to make workplaces safer.

Accordingly, if you have an accident or you are aware of any dangerous occurrences, you must immediately contact your local FBU Official.
